Hurricane Season Prep: Protecting Your Home and Peace of Mind

Valerie Barber, REALTOR® • June 3, 2025

Living in Florida, I know firsthand how crucial it is to prepare for hurricane season. With storms becoming more frequent and intense, taking proactive steps can make all the difference in safeguarding your home and loved ones.

Fortify Your Home

1. Roof Inspection:  Ensure your roof is in top condition. Repair any damaged areas and consider installing hurricane straps to keep the framework attached to your home.

2. Secure Windows and Doors:  Install hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows. For doors, especially garage doors, check for wind ratings and reinforce them as needed. The garage door is often the largest and weakest opening on a home.

3. Trim Trees and Landscaping:  Remove dead or overhanging branches that could become projectiles during high winds. An arborist can help assess and mitigate risks posed by trees near your property.

Assemble an Emergency Kit

Having a well-stocked emergency kit is essential. Include:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day)
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Medications and first aid supplies
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Important documents in waterproof containers
  • Cash
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Pet supplies

Remember to check and update your kit regularly, ensuring all items are in working order and not expired.
